It was developed at the Donetskaya Vegetable Experiment Station in Ukraine where it is known as ‘Almaz’. Brought to the states by Kent Whealy of the Seed Savers Exchange in the 1990’s, this vigorous and tasty variety has become a reliable choice for open pollinated eggplant varieties that have a deep purple color and long, slightly tapered shapes. It has good disease resistance and has no bitter flavors. Seeds grown at Flytree Farm in Northfield, VT, and seed stock came from the folks at Uprising Seeds.
