They were developed at the Donetskaya Vegetable Experiment Station in Ukraine where they’re known as ‘Almaz’. Brought to the states by Kent Whealy of the Seed Savers Exchange in the 1990’s, this vigorous and tasty variety has become a reliable choice for open pollinated eggplant varieties that have a deep purple color and long, slightly tapered shapes. They have good disease resistance and have no bitter flavors. Seed stock came from Uprising Seeds.
